In 1987, as part of the Golden Gate Bridge’s 50th anniversary, individual commemorative bricks were purchased by donors, many to celebrate special occasions of their own. In January 2012 those bricks were torn up and dug out , also causing many hearts to break.
“The bricks were targeted because, as part of construction plans associated with the 75th anniversary this year, a proximate slope needed to be regraded to comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act.” Sadly, but environmentally correct, the bricks will be recycled as concrete mix. In place of the randomly placed bricks, an alphabetical panel inscribed with the 7,500 inscriptions from the collection will be installed (location and date not known).
